Types of Pipe Clamps Explained

Pipe clamps are usually grouped by how they support the pipe, how much load they carry, and whether they need noise, corrosion, or thermal control. The most common types are split-band, U-bolt, cushioned, heavy-duty, riser, and specialized clamps for gas, fire protection, or insulated service.

Main types

Types of Pipe Clamps Explained

Pipe Clamps
  • Split-band clamps: Common in plumbing and HVAC, they wrap around the pipe and fasten to a support point.

  • U-bolt clamps: Simple, strong clamps that use a U-shaped bolt and plate, often used for rigid mounting.

  • Cushioned clamps: Include a rubber or elastomer liner to reduce vibration and noise.

  • Heavy-duty clamps: Built for larger loads and industrial piping where strength matters most.

  • Riser clamps: Used to support vertical pipe runs and transfer load to the structure.

Special-purpose clamps

  • Stainless steel clamps: Chosen where corrosion resistance is important, especially in humid or aggressive environments.

  • Gas clamps: Designed for gas piping with higher safety requirements.

  • Fire sprinkler clamps: Made for fire protection systems and often certified to relevant standards.

  • Thermal insulating clamps: Used where temperature control and condensation prevention matter.

  • Worm-drive clamps: More common for hoses and flexible tubing than fixed pipe support, but often included in clamp discussions because of their adjustability.

How to choose

Pick the clamp based on pipe material, diameter, load, vibration, and environment. For example, a chilled-water line in a humid mechanical room often benefits from a cushioned or insulated stainless clamp, while a light interior run may only need a standard split-band or U-bolt clamp.

Practical rule

If the pipe must be quiet, use a cushioned type. If it must carry more weight, use a heavy-duty or riser clamp. If corrosion is a concern, stainless steel is usually the safer choice.
